Many business managers complain the abuse of internet access by employees at work area for non-business activities like viewing social sites and pornographic sites, reading jokes, mailing/chatting friends, etc. Seldom business managers find solution for this. Some managers take hard decisions straight away like punishing the employee or banning internet access etc. These tips can help you better in managing internet access abuse at work area.
- Develop an internet usage policy for your company, with the help and feedbacks from your employees. This makes them some what responsible, as no one want to break the rules (first) created by him/her.
- Frequently (not often) warn employees about the abuse of internet access in the company, only as general.
- Identify and short-list the employees who are suspected for abusing internet. And analyze if there any reduction in their productivity and quality of work.
- Make sure the suspected employees get enough work to be completed. It is good to avoid employees who just want to use internet as an entertainment medium to overcome his/her small non-work periods, say less than 20 minutes a day.
- If there is decrease in productivity, with the help of your network administrator, post messages for employees when ever they try to access a site, which is not related to his/her work.
- If problem not solved, then call them at office individually and show them the evidence, such as log files, decrease in productivity and work quality, you got for their internet abuse.
- If problem still remains or it is getting worse, then punish the employee in front of others and ban internet access, or fire him/her if he/she is not any more productive.
